Perth’s best Chinese restaurants: the ultimate list

Staff WritersHills Avon Valley Gazette

We thought we’d ask our staff to nominate their picks for the very best Chinese restaurants Perth has to offer.

The response was overwhelming – seemingly everyone in the office knows of the very best place in town, except no two are the same.

And talk about parochial, CNG people are as passionate about their suburb’s Chinese place as they are their local footy team.

Once we convened a meeting and hammered it out, we were left with these picks for Perth’s premier Chinese restaurants:

15. Good One BBQ, 808 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park

Classic greasy spoon but churns out some of the best roast duck and pork you can find. Rockpool’s Neil Perry even sings their praises. Don’t expect any bells and whistles though.

14. Mr Ho’s, 43A Davidson Terrace, Joondalup

Mr Ho’s $10.95 takeaway box, after 5pm from Tuesday to Thursday, is famous in the north. We recommend the salt and pepper calamari for a taste you won’t forget.

Open Good Friday (dinner only)

13. Golden Eagle, 1 Barber Street, Kalamunda

A Hills institution since 1972, Golden Eagle does some superb Szechuan-style lamb, and the beef with black bean sauce is another winner.

12. Billy Lee’s Chinese, 66 Roe Street, Northbridge

Central and very reasonably priced, Billy Lee’s is the go-to spot for late night Chinese munchies. They do everything well but we find it hard to go past the good old fried rice – perfect for sobering up before the trudge home.

11. Serenade Palace, outside Grand Cinemas Warwick

Ahhh, what’s a trip to Warwick to see a movie without stopping off at – before or after – Serenade Palace for some of the wonderful Chinese cuisine? This place has been catering to the hunger pangs of the movie-going set for years, consistently turning out quality food.

Open Good Friday

10. Imperial Court, 125 Melville Parade, Como

Want Perth’s absolute best freshly made dim sum? Head to Imperial Court, where you’ll find that along will all manner of other delicious delights.

Open Good Friday

9. Silk Flower, 8A/26 Safety Bay Rd, Baldivis

The Silk Flower has been a great addition to the Baldivis food scene, and we absolutely, positively recommend the sizzling brownies with ice-cream. Naughty, but oh so nice.

Open Good Friday

8. China Garden Chinese Restaurant, 152A Queens Road, South Guildford

Did someone say honey prawns? Yes siree, we did. China Garden does them with style. Other favourites are the boxing chicken (a knockout) and the scallops with garlic sauce.

7. Wah Sun Chinese Restaurant, 189 Walter Road, Dianella

The lemon chicken? The best you will ever taste. A classic suburban restaurant – on a main road but quiet inside and the food is always so good.

6. Fong’s Kitchen, 335 Canning Highway, Palmyra

Need a taste sensation? Order the spicy Nyonya chicken from Fong’s kitchen. You’re welcome.

Open Good Friday

5. Green Ocean Asian Restaurant, Greenfields Shopping Centre, Mandurah

In the salubrious surrounds of the Greenfields Shopping Centre sits a true gem. Honey chicken? Winner. Green curry? Superb. And the fried rice is a contender for all-time great.

4. Hawker’s Cuisine, 40 Francis Street, Northbridge

Another Northbridge hot spot, do yourself a favour and try the Nasi Lemak – coconut rice served with chicken curry and a hardboiled egg…

3. Greenwood Garden Chinese, Greenwood Village, Coolibah Drive

Hard to go past Greenwood’s finest – we recommend the fillet steak in black pepper. With a side of fillet steak in black pepper. And if you’ve got any room left for dessert … try the fillet steak in black pepper.

2. Aquarium Seafood Chinese Restaurant, 202 Great Eastern Highway Ascot

Pork with black bean sauce and the lemongrass chicken are venerable favourites, but the black pepper fillet steak is off the chart.

Open Good Friday

1. Silks, Crown Perth, Burswood

Check out Silks’ degustation menus if you plan on ringing in the Year of the Rooster in style. The Jade menu is incredible, but order the Signature Dim Sum Selection on top of that because it’s blasphemy to go past their dim sum when you’re there. The wine list is beautifully paired with their Cantonese-style cuisine so go for the wine-pairing option if you’re not driving.
