Perth’s best pizza: from Clarkson to Halls Head, we’ve got you covered

Even bad pizza is still pretty good, right?

A base, some tomato paste, a bit of cheese, ham, pepperoni and bellissimo.

But for some people, pizza is religion.

And when you’ve tasted some of these, you’ll be having a religious experience yourself.

Their bases are the result of years of tinkering, the toppings inventive and delicious. But for all the invention, a good pizza joint has to get the basics absolutely right.

Here at communitynews.com.au, we’re passionate about pizza. Just like these guys.

10. Mamma Mia Pizza, 2/30 Ainsbury Parade Clarkson – 9305 0005

lf
Mamma Mia Pizza – pride of the new north.

Mamma Mia Pizza in Clarkson features a massive range of traditional and experimental pizzas. But make sure you save room for dessert, because their sweet pizzas are incredible. ‘The Boss’ combines a bed of Nutella and chocolate custard with raspberry finished with almond nougat, as well as shaved white and Belgian chocolate. Insert Homer Simpson sounds here…

9. Leapfrogs Cafe, 25 Drovers Place Wanneroo (Wanneroo Botanic Gardens) – 9206 4077

mm
Enjoy some refreshments after a triumphant night of mini golf.

Leapfrogs Cafe is situated in the Wanneroo Botanic Gardens, so you can call in after a game of mini golf for one of their scrumptious wood-fired pizzas. Take a seat in the beautiful alfresco area to unwind with an ale on a summer’s night.

8. Chelsea Pizza, 145 Stirling Highway Nedlands – 9386 7833

Chelsea Pizza
Nedlands’ finest crust: Chelsea Pizza

Thin-crust pioneers, Chelsea Pizza is a Nedlands institution that has been around for more than 40 years. It’s easy to see why, as their pizzas are consistently top shelf, with a host of gourmet options using only the finest of ingredients.

7. Marco’s Pizza, 17a Wanneroo Road Joondanna – 9242 1933

Marco's Pizza is a sublime eating experience.
Marco’s Pizza is a sublime eating experience.

Marco’s offers organic bases with a range of amazing pizzas – from chicken and mango, pork belly, roast lamb and vegetable to goats cheese and roast pumpkin. Prepare yourself for a pizza experience not to be missed.

6. Ruocco’s Pizzeria e Ristorante, 217 South Terrace South Fremantle – 9335 6939

Ruocco's seafood pizza: a spiritual experience.
Ruocco’s seafood pizza: a spiritual experience.

Another institution, Ruocco’s has been a Fremantle fixture since 1978. Seafood on a pizza can be polarising – some pizza worshippers see it as sacrilege – but once you’ve tried Ruocco’s, we’re pretty sure you’ll be a convert.

5. Perfect Pizza, Guava Way Halls Head (near Old Coast Road) – 9535 5888

Pizza
Perfect Pizza, but don’t take our word for it.

‘Pizzas made by chefs’ is the word on the Perfect Pizza website, and you won’t be in any doubt once you’ve tried a slice. Again, seafood gets a fair run, but their selection of vegetarian pizzas is superb, and their Sicilian is as good as it gets.

4. Allegros Pizza, 231a Stirling Highway Claremont – 9383 1347

Allegros Pizza turned 34 this year.

Allegros has been operating since 1982. It’s open from 11am for lunch too, so don’t be afraid to try their breakfast pizza (bacon, eggs, tomato) if you’re a tad worse for wear. Personally, we think the addition of egg to their capricciosa is a masterstroke.

3. Little Caesars, 7125 Great Eastern Highway Mundaring – 9295 6611

ss
Little Caesars’ sweet and sour pork pizza.

Founded 20 years ago by chef Theo Kalogeracos and his wife Elisabetta, Little Caesars is a multiple-award-winning Hills mainstay. In the past three years, some of Kalogeracos’ creations have scooped gongs in Italy and the USA.

2. Stone’s Pizza, 400 Fitzgerald Street North Perth – 9228 1877

The Stone’s Pizza gurus are always experimenting, like this ‘coccodrillo’.

Opened in 2005, Stone’s Pizza has chefs that love to get creative, and it’s worth keeping an eye on their website to find out what their ‘pizza of the fortnight’ is. At the time of publication it was the Dr Paul – fusing roasted potato, onion, artichoke, pineapple, marinated baby field mushroom, shaved parmesan cheese with Dr Paul sauce.

Now, drum roll please…

1. Dough Pizza, 434a William Street Perth – 9228 0444

Italian sausage, pancetta and mascarpone, Dough style.

Dough Pizza creates sumptuous, wood-fired pizzas that nudge fine-dining levels of sophistication. We recommend the Bianca, the Ortalana or the Montanara for an experience you won’t soon forget.

Keep an eye out for…

California Pizza Kitchen – the American smash hit is all set to open it’s first Perth outlet at Hillarys Marina on September 27.
