“I was going to do it when I started high school and then I got an injury, so I had to put that off,” she said.

“And then my best friend, who also lives up here, started triathlon and was like ‘give it a shot’.”

Catherine is a strong runner and cyclist but struggled with the swim.

“Swimming was very new. I think I did squad for like three weeks beforehand; I was never a great swimmer so it’s been quite hard,” she said.

Catherine, part of Kalamunda’s S4L Triathlon Coaching, said after completing her studies this year she hopes to race on the Australian circuit.

“I’d like to do that this summer,” she said.

“And from there I’ll be in under-23, so I’ll try to do the under-23 circuits and see where that leads.”

Daly trained about nine times a week heading into the recent national competition.

She said she was happy to have finished and for the chance to race the event.

“It’s always exciting to cross the line,” she said.

“It was really good. The atmosphere is really different to racing at home.”
