A NIGHT of stargazing and a chance to learn more about the galaxy is on the cards for volunteers who support their local communities.

Volunteers from Kalamunda State Emergency Service (SES) and Kalamunda Bush Fire Brigade secured a grant towards the cost of an event to strengthen friendships among their volunteers outside the call of duty.

Kalamunda SES deputy local manager Cath Inman said the grant would largely fund ‘a night under the stars to thank our community stars’ at Bickley Observatory.

“We continually support one another through emergencies, training and other times in need, and we operate under the same local headquarters roof in the Shire of Kalamunda,” she said.

“It will be nice to have a fun activity to give back to our volunteers on May 13.”

Ms Inman said it was the first time it had applied for a grant and the organisations were extremely grateful to Volunteering WA and Lotterywest for the recognition.

The 2017-theme for National Volunteer Week, from May 8 to 14, is ‘give happy, live happy’ because according to the latest research, volunteers live happier and healthier lives.
