BILL Leadbetter has been elected as a Member for the East Metropolitan Region to fill a casual vacancy in the Legislative Council.
The casual vacancy was created after Amber-Jade Sanderson MLC’s resignation to successfully contest the seat of Morley in the State Election.
Dr Leadbetter has a background as an educator, having taught in both secondary schools and universities.
He has written extensively in the fields of history and archaeology and was a regular guest on the ABC’s Sunday Nights with John Cleary.
Dr Leadbetter will fill the position until May 21.
“I am pleased and excited to be elected as the Member for the East Metropolitan Region,” he said.
“I have big shoes to fill. Amber-Jade Sanderson is an outstanding local MP and I wish her every success in her new roles as the Member for Morley and Cabinet Secretary.
“I love the East Metropolitan region. I live here, I shop here, I have worked and campaigned here.
“I have been lucky to meet so many good and hard-working people whom it is now my privilege to represent, if only for a short time.
“I hope to take this opportunity to advance the causes that really matter to me – equity in education, creating jobs, universal access to quality health care, the retention of penalty rates and making our community safer.”
