REGULAR vessel maintenance and the need to check safety equipment will be highlighted by Department of Transport staff at the Dowerin Field Days.
Department safety education co-ordinator Laurie Adams said the event provided an opportunity to promote the BEST check safety campaign before summer.
“The campaign introduces skippers to the BEST safety checklist which identifies items under the headings boat, equipment, safety equipment and trailer to be maintained before each trip,” he said.
“It also promotes an annual 45-point check and spring is the best time to undertake this as it allows time for repairs before the boating season.”
Free checklists will be available to skippers visiting the department’s stand.
Officers will also reinforce the need to carry in-date flares in unprotected waters, EPIRB requirements and remind people that vessels should to be registered with the department if they are on the water.
The Dowerin Field Days are on August 24 and 25.
