BILGOMAN Scout District will mark a centenary of scouting at a community event in Mundaring.

The milestone will be double the fun for the 1st Mundaring Scout Group, where boys and girls will commemorate their own 100th anniversary.

Mundaring is one of half a dozen scout groups in the district.

Celebrations planned for August 19 will feature an inflatable obstacle course, crafts, music, food and a heritage display.

Mundaring group leader Yvonne Chow said scouting was open to children aged six to 25 and from next year, the joining age would lower to five and a half years.

“We offer outdoor activities, camping and a chance to learn lots of skills, such as tying knots, and ‘night hawk’ training in using a compass,” she said.

“It’s also a good opportunity to interact with like-minded people.”

Mrs Chow’s 17-year-old son James, who attends Helena College, first joined as a seven-year-old Joey and is now a Venturer.

Mundaring Shire awarded a $2500 milestone grant to 1st Mundaring Scout Group in support of the 100th anniversary.

The community event will run from 10am to 4pm at Mundaring Scout Hall and the Sculpture Park.
