Child abuse exposed

Sophie Gabrielle, Avon Valley GazetteHills Avon Valley Gazette

The Commission is due to hold its first WA public hearings next month and Relationships Australia, which has been funded by the Federal Government to provide support and counselling to people who intend to give evidence, will visit Broome, Northam and Port Hedland over the next few weeks.

The public inquiry is investigating how institutions failed to protect or respond to children suffering from sexual abuse.

Schools, sporting clubs, orphanages, foster care and religious organisations, group homes and clubs are just some of the institutions under scrutiny.

Disturbing allegations of sexual abuse at St Christopher’s Hostel in Northam were revealed during a special inquiry on sexual abuse at State-run hostels, conducted by former Supreme Court Judge Peter Blaxell in 2012.

Relationships Australia WA spokeswoman Charmaine Kennedy will host the Northam informal information session at Bridgeley Community Centre to enable groups and individuals to learn more about the free support service.

The Relationships Australia Royal Commission Support Service (RCSS) offers free support to people affected by the hearings.

This includes those who would like to tell their story before the Commission, as well as those who do not intend to testify.

Ms Kennedy said the program provided individuals with an opportunity to let their voice be heard in a trustworthy, respectful and confidential environment.

‘We provide support for those people who want to share their story to help make a difference to children’s lives in the future,’ Ms Kennedy said.

‘I encourage those who may be working with people who have been affected to come along to our information event and learn more about the range of free services we provide.

‘It is a great opportunity for organisations and individuals to meet the support team.’
