THE Swan Bell Tower gave Chidlow artist Lyn Blasgund the inspiration for an entry that won her a place in the showcase event of Wearable Art Mandurah.

Her piece Bella Belfry entered in the architectural category of Wearable Art is one of 40 successful garments that will feature in a theatrical production.

The show, led by Melbourne-based Artistic Director Helen Duncan, includes a cast of professional theatre, dancers and musicians.

Blasgund said the building challenged her to produce a wearable garment to replicate its form and beauty.

“Its glass structure is surrounded by tiled bronze sails which appear to protect the fragile core of glass,” she said.

“Rubber sheeting with a bubble design imitates the waters in which the sails would propel a vessel.

“The tube inserts are for the verandas surrounding the glass dome.”

She said the bronze colour and shape of the cape followed the fluid lines of the sails.

“The headpiece forms the top of the sails and the tower,” she said.

The garment is made from machine sewn rubber material dress with pleats to insert the plastic tubing.

Window treatment fabric sprayed with bronze paint, machine sewn with boning forms the shape of sails.

A found item for the headpiece was covered with rubber fabric with florist wire for antennae.

Performances will be held at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre in the evening on Saturday, June 10 and in the afternoon on Sunday, June 11.

The final 40 garments were chosen from 114 entries submitted this year including international entries from Romania, Switzerland and New Zealand.

Nationally, entries came from as far as Alice Springs, Darwin, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Queensland.
