Volunteers are now busy packing up some of the museum collection, which will be sent to a specialist conservation studio in Perth.

Portraits of late 19th century and early 20th century identities who were instrumental in shaping York will undergo treatment at the Preservation Services studios.

To help care for the collection, the grant also includes funding for two dust-free storage units.

Museum curator Carol Littlefair said the museum is a great venue for families, with many hands-on activities.

‘The Residency Museum is regarded in heritage circles as an outstanding small museum and is extremely popular with visitors,’ she said.

But Ms Littlefair said it was in desperate need of more volunteers, who could open the museum to visitors, especially at weekends.

‘You don’t need museum experience or local history knowledge, just a friendly smile to welcome visitors,’ she said.
