Community radio station may have found new home

Staff ReporterHills Avon Valley Gazette

The future of the station was cast under a cloud when the WA Police announced last month it would sell the property that housed the not-for-profit station.

The site closed as a police station in 1990 and operations were shifted to the former Shire offices at Canning Road.

The old site was deemed by the State Government as ‘surplus’ and is part of its assets sale.

The search for new premises for the station, which had operated from Mead Street for more than 10 years, ended when the Shire of Kalamunda offered a lease of a council property at 36 Collins Road.

KCR chairman Neil Mackay said the management committee was ‘very thankful’ for the Shire’s support and the positive outcome.

‘Our members have certainly been concerned about the sale of Mead Street,’ he said.

Shire chief executive Rhonda Hardy said the radio station’s committee would still need to obtain external funding to enable them to move in to a purpose-fit facility.
