Detention centre takes in Geraldton asylum seekers

Staff ReporterHills Avon Valley Gazette

The 66 Sri Lankan asylum seekers made their way to Geraldton, one of the busiest regional ports in Australia, on a rickety fishing vessel, on Tuesday.

The boat made it to |within metres of the mainland before being intercepted by two local men in a dinghy.

Those on board the vessel told the men they had been at sea for at least six weeks, having travelled more than 5000km. Other asylum seekers from the boat have already been moved to Christmas Island while others are being held in detention centres in Perth.
