Ghost or trick of the light? A Perth team is trying to find out.

There are various versions of their origins, including stories about a young pregnant woman who committed suicide and small girl who was drowned by a man in an upper level female bathroom. None can be backed up be historical documentation.

However, many people, including hotel staff, have reported witnessing strange happenings on the hotel’s second floor.

The Perth-based Paranormal Activity Research Australia (PARA) recently conducted a major investigation at the hotel that culminated in a lengthy process of listening to audio recordings, reviewing video footage and going through hundreds of photographs. It gave the hotel a ‘haunting score’ of three on a five-stage scale.

Group co-founder Melissa Wood said PARA used an electromagnetic field (EMF) meter, dowsing rods, an electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) recorder, a camera, a full spectrum night vision camcorder and an infra-red thermometer in the probe.

She said group members experienced constant movement of the dowsing rods and spikes on the EMF meter, suggesting a higher than normal electromagnetic field reading. There were also temperature fluctuations in the building of 4-5 degrees, the EVP recorder captured the voice of a small girl and an older man and there was video footage of a pink light and moving orb.

Investigators also reported a constant tapping sound in a storage room.

However, she said the undoubted highlights were the capture of a photograph of a ghostly image of a woman standing near the end of the hotel’s balcony and video footage of an orb moving toward the camera, vanishing and then shooting back to the right in the upstairs hallway.

Mrs Wood said the evidence showed there was a lot of paranormal activity at the hotel.

‘We are definitely going back to look into it further,’ she said.

PARA is not the only paranormal group to survey the hotel and come to a similar conclusion.

In 2002, Perth Ghost Hunters paranormal research and investigations conducted what was probably one of the most in-depth paranormal inquiries at the hotel.

If focussed on the old abandoned second floor of the original hotel, which consists of eight rooms and two main hallways leading a couple of large rooms.

Using an EMF scanner, digital camera and audio recorder, it documented several unusual incidents, including EVPs.

The group concluded ‘something may be happening here, though will require further investigation and more evidence to come to a haunted conclusion.’
