Five-year tick for timber facility

The Shire of Northam agreed to grant the facility, on Great Eastern Highway, a five-year extension instead of the officer’s recommendation of three years, labelling that time frame as conservative.

The council gave the facility an initial 12-month planning approval period on March 20, 2013. It uses 1.2ha of a 17.5ha property to recycle wood and metal in telegraph poles.

The metal is disposed of and the wood is cut into pieces for sale as firewood.

The planning approval also includes the storage of goods and selling of goods by wholesale and retail methods.

Shire of Northam President Steven Pollard said that despite some concerns from neighbours, there had not been any major incidents during the 12-month temporary approval.

‘If any problems do come up we can still cancel the planning approval,’ Mr Pollard said.

The business operating hours for using electric sawing and other machinery are 8am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays and 8am to noon on Saturdays.

Business hours for manual activities without the use of electrical equipment are Mondays to Fridays from 7am to 7pm and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 8am to noon.

A dust management plan must be submitted to and approved by the Shire of Northam in four weeks of the council meeting. The use of petrol chainsaws on the property is prohibited.
