STUDENTS at Mary’s Mount Primary School in Gooseberry swapped the indoors for the great outdoors when they took part in Outdoor Classroom Day on Wednesday .

Kindy teacher Tamara Ellenbroek said the global initiative was a wonderful way to get more children outside for the day, allowing them to get in touch with nature.

“We know that outdoor play has many health benefits for children, but it also encourages the children to build vital life skills such as taking risks, solving problems and working through challenges as a team,” she said.

“We have found that daily play in our nature playground has assisted the children in building friendships, becoming more resilient and it has given them the opportunity to start working though problems without the assistance of adults.”

Ms Ellenbroek said nature helped children engage with learning.

“There is an abundance of learning that takes place when you allow children to play, learn and explore in their natural environment,” she said.

“We take our wonder questions from our outside play and investigate them further through project style learning that starts with the needs and interests of the children.”
