Heart in red dress events

Creating awareness of ways to reduce the risks is the focus of the Heart Foundation throughout June.

The Foundation is asking people to hold a Dress Red event in their workplace or community group to help spread the word.

"Every day in Australia, 50 women will have a heart attack," a Heart Foundation spokeswoman said.

"Eleven of these women will die from their event; that's one woman every two hours."

There is no single cause of heart disease, but risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being a smoker, being physically inactive, carrying too much weight and eating an unhealthy diet increase the risk.

About 90 per cent of Australian women have at least one risk factor for heart disease.
