Helena Valley: Backyard operation produces Perth’s best gelato

Blair JacksonHills Avon Valley Gazette

MIMMO Sabatino makes, sells and distributes award-winning gelatos all from his home in Helena Valley.

Despite not yet establishing a bricks and mortar production location, he has built Mimmo’s Gourmet Gelato into a viable wholesaler that supplies weddings, functions and ice creameries from a specially built backyard gelato laboratory.

The business won Champion Gelato and Champion Sorbet at this year’s Perth Royal Dairy Awards, an annual presentation from the Royal Agricultural Society of WA to recognise the State’s best produce.

Mr Sabatino (53) said he was very proud of the awards and he loves what he does.

“I grew up in the food industry, it’s in the blood. I enjoy what I do,” Mr Sabatino said.

“We’re looking at some point to open our own shop, but it’s in the early stages.”

Mr Sabatino enjoys coming up with new flavours but admits he has a favourite – the dark chocolate sorbet.

He also produced a very popular goat’s cheese gelato for the Royal Show awards.
