A STEP Ahead Early Learning Centre in Helena Valley has been nominated for a second year in a row for a major award in this year’s Australian Family Early Education and Care Awards.

Centre manager Leeanne Rough, who has been nominated for Director of the Year alongside the centre’s nomination for Early Childhood Centre of the Year, said she was humbled by the nominations.

“One of my passions is ensuring our children are active and get the most out of their education, so we use excursions and incursions to their fullest to give our children additional education,” she said.

“Every month the children do bush kinder, a library visit, visit an age care home and do a playgroup with a local high school.

“These are just our permanent monthly excursions, but we also take them other places that reflect their curriculum.”

Ms Rough said she had been in the industry for 18 years and loved that every day was different.

“I love seeing the children challenge themselves and succeed,” she said.

“Nothing beats a child’s smile when they accomplish something.

“Children teach us so much everyday and they look at the world so simply, it’s refreshing.

“I love my job so this is just the cherry on top to be recognised.”

The national winners of each category will be announced at the Australian Early Education and Care Awards gala event on Friday, June 15.
