January is peak season for snake bites … here’s how to keep your pet safe

RESEARCH indicates about 3000 people are bitten by snakes every year, with figures at their highest in January.

A pet suspected of having a snake bite should be taken immediately to the closest emergency vet.

According to Pet Insurance Australia, the following steps could help prevent snake bites:

n Keep pets on a leash in bush or long grass;

n Keep lawns and grass short;

n Move woodpiles away from dog areas;

n Check for snakes and skins;

n Leave water features empty;

n Consider keeping cats indoors during these months.
