A SAWYERS Valley man accused of using a shovel in an attempt to murder a Finish national is due to reappear in court next month.

Matt Lewis Whittaker appeared in Stirling Gardens Magistrate Court today via video link from Hakea Prison charged with attempting to kill over the July incident.

The 36-year-old allegedly hit a 33-year-old man from Finland with the car he was driving on July 28 near Paulls Valley on the Bibbulmun Track.

It’s further alleged that Mr Whittaker then hit the man, who was with a 33-year-old Finish woman, with a shovel and caused a significant head wound.

Mr Whittaker was charged with attempted unlawfully to kill and appeared in the Midland Magistrates Court in July when Magistrate Martin Flynn adjourned the matter to August.

He was remanded in custody and reappeared in front of Magistrate Jan Whitbread this morning at Stirling Gardens.

In the absence of Mr Whittaker’s lawyer John Rando, a State representative requested the matter be adjourned until next month for the homicide squad to provide disclosure.

Mr Whittaker will be remanded in Hakea and reappear in Stirling Gardens on September 26 for a mention only.

Mr Whittaker is due to appear in Midland Magistrates Court on August 24 over two stealing offences.
