FORMER Swan Mayor Charlie Zannino has called for the City to rethink a draft plan that allows traffic through Midland Oval.
Mr Zannino said the design should be created around people rather than cars.
“Do you want people to come and spend time there or do you just want cars to come there?” he said.
“If you want the cars to come there, you’re doing a great job but people won’t stay there because they don’t like car fumes.”
He said removing the roads would take away the nature element that many locals were fighting to keep.
The Midland Oval master plan – which included the roads – was approved in November last year.
Mr Zannino said residents had expressed the need for more public open space, and one option was to build underneath.
“Putting roads underneath the oval would make more public open space available and give designers more options to create areas that would attract people,” he said.
“It might cost more, but it is completely do-able. They said it would be too expensive to build the Lloyd Street tunnel but look at it now.”
