AN alleged arsonist has been accused of threatening an off duty police officer with a metal bar after he was questioned over a scrub fire lit in Midvale last night.

A police spokeswoman said the officer allegedly saw the 48-year-old Hazelmere man lighting fire to grass along the verge of Roe Highway near Morrison Road about 8.20pm.

“The off duty officer approached the man who then allegedly threatened the officer with a metal bar,” she said.

:”The officer identified himself as a police officer to the man who refused to drop the weapon.”

A member of the public attempted to help the officer but was told it was unsafe to do so.

Police later detained the alleged offender, who was taken to St John of God Hospital in Midland for assessment.

Investigators charged him with wilfully lighting a fire, going armed in public to cause fear, obstructing a police officer, disorderly conduct and drug possession.

He is due to appear in Midland Magistrates Court today.
