CROWDS gathered for a free community event at Mundaring Arena on Sunday.

Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray and Shire President John Daw attended the official opening.

Councillor Daw said the $10.1 million arena would help the sporting community reach its potential without the need to travel long distances or change clubs.

Local basketball and netball associations have used the arena since their winter season began a few weeks ago.

The opening highlighted the collaborative efforts of the community and government to finance the project.

Hills Raiders Basketball, Hills Night Hockey and Eastern Hills Netball associations each contributed between $10,000 and $30,000 to the arena.

The remainder comprised $7 million of Shire funds, with $3m from the State and $100,000 from Bendigo Bank.
