SEVERAL sites suitable for social housing have been identified in the Shires of Mundaring, Kalamunda and the City of Swan.

Under the Social Housing Investment Package (SHIP), 29 homes are in the pipeline for Swan View, Stratton, Koongamia, Caversham, Ellenbrook, Aveley and Brabham.

The social housing investment is part of a 600 new homes program by the State Government to provide accommodation for vulnerable families and seniors.

Housing Minister Brendon Grylls said the package presented opportunities for local builders.

“Construction through SHIP will inject $174 million of work to the local building industry, boosting the WA economy and securing more than 1500 local jobs,” he said.

SHIP director Tanya Steinbeck said people on the housing priority waiting list would benefit from an additional 200 properties bought on the open market, including four properties earmarked for the North East Metropolitan Region.

“These properties may be currently under construction, newly built or existing homes,” she said.

“The exact locations in which these purchases are to be made is subject to finalisation and commercial negotiations.”

Another 200 properties will be leased from the private rental market for social housing in the metropolitan area, including “a portion expected to be in the North East Metropolitan Region”.

The $564 million housing boost is due for completion by June 30 next year.
