MUNDARING is joining a small number of public libraries around Australia offering a free seed sharing service to encourage residents to grow their own produce.

Local growers willing to donate or exchange seeds are supporting the community-driven seed library at Albert Facey Memorial Library.

Shire of Mundaring libraries and community engagement manager Shannon Foster said staff had embraced the idea after local groups including Mundaring in Transition, Glen Forrest Community Garden, Perth Hills Permies and Mundaring Organic Growers Group approached them.

“The Hills have a very strong community of backyard gardeners, many of whom already meet to share their seeds,” Ms Foster said.

“The Seed Library has all the makings of a great community initiative, which will encourage locals to not only share their produce with each other but their skills and knowledge too.”

The new seed library joins only three other libraries in the state bringing people together to share their appreciation for local produce and passion for gardening.

The first phase of the initiative involves collecting a variety of organic, heirloom and native seeds from the community.

Volunteers will soon be invited to help document the free service.

Interested community members are encouraged to pick-up a seed collection bag from the library at Nichol Street.

Seed donations may be left at the library.
