MUNDARING Shire today celebrated Naidoc week with a free community event.

This year’s theme ‘Because of Her, We Can’ celebrates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

Senior Whadjuk Yok Cindy Nelson performed the Welcome to Country ahead of a flag raising ceremony at the Shire offices and bush tucker tastings from Bindi Bindi Dreaming.

Ms Nelson later led a cultural walk to Mundaring Lesser Hall where Urban Indigenous invited visitors to join in an art activity.

Shire President Councillor Daw said the event commemorated an important week.

“Today is an opportunity for us to pay respect to our nation’s first people and acknowledge those who work to preserve their culture,” he said.

Children enjoyed activities with Swan Districts Football Club at the Sculpture Park.
