A CAMPAIGN to stop work starting on a State Administration Tribunal (SAT) approved rubbish dump near York has taken a new direction, with Planning Minister Rita Saffioti banning landfill within the Shire of York.

Farmer Kay Davies’ property would border the Great Southern Landfill at Allawuna Farm.

She said the Minister’s ban announced on March 16 in the Government Gazette WA was a great win for the York community.

York councillors voted unanimously in 2016 to prohibit landfills within the Shire.

However, the Mid-West Wheatbelt Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) has still to meet to consider a work extension application from the landfill applicants, AMI Holdings and Alkina Holdings.

SAT ruled on March 15 the JDAP must vote on the request before April 13.

Mrs Davies, who has campaigned against the landfill since 2012, said this would be the third time the landfill development had gone to JDAP for a decision.

“If the JDAP denies the extension, I understand the applicants may appeal for a SAT decision. It’s a huge waste of ratepayers and taxpayers money,” she said.

Shire councillors have voted against a work extension on the landfill development.

York President David Wallace said even though the Planning Minister ruled against landfill within the Shire, the applicant’s extension request had to go through the local government process.

“The door is closing on the people who want to build the landfill, but it’s not shut yet,” he said.
