About 100 people turned out to pay tribute to the historic landmark built in 1933.

People with connections to the church were encouraged to attend and bring photos and other historic documents that related to the church.

Maureen Cooper, who helped organise the event, said the church was still an important part of the community.

‘Current parishioners and past parishioners attended,’ Mrs Cooper said.

‘It was a bit of a reunion, as many of the people hadn’t seen each other in years.’

Commemorative gifts, including wine glasses and coffee mugs, were on sale.

Misty Ridge Plant Farm, of Wundowie, supplied plants to the church to create a commemorative garden.

‘Everything went nicely and it was very enjoyable,’ Mrs Cooper said.

Sacred Heart School was established in 1952 on the land adjacent to the church in Coolgardie Street.
