He disclosed the plan in response to a ratepayers question about the councils decision to rezone community land at Greenmount Library during a public meeting in Boya. However, the six-lane upgrade is not likely to be built any time soon because the project is underfunded and there is no timeline, according to a Main Roads spokeswoman. She confirmed the planned improvements were in the Metropolitan Region Scheme but said there was no proposal to prevent right turns from Scott Street into the highway.
The current planning concept retains full movements at Scott Street, however, as with any future proposal this is subject to review, the spokeswoman said.
The Scott Street intersection has not been nominated for black spot funding, despite 55 crashes between January 2009 to December 2013 the latest data currently available. More than 840 ratepayers signed a petition calling on the council to retain land at the corner of Scott Street for public open space and community use.
Friends of Greenmount co-ordinator Colin Hughes said residents were rightly concerned about why a council would rezone the area R40; meaning up to 30 new units of 180-220 sq m could be built at such a dangerous corner.
