Due to open by September 2017, the Northam store will be on the corner of Wellington and Gairdner streets.

The WA expansion plans are expected to create more than 1200 construction jobs and about 850 retail jobs, on top of the 11,700 roles that already exist across the state.

Wesfarmers managing director Richard Goyder said the $120 million investment in 10 stores reflected confidence in the future of WA.

“We are pleased to be investing in WA and generating more jobs in the community with the roll-out of new, bigger and better market-style supermarkets for local shoppers,” Mr Goyder said.

“Coles has been a proud part of the WA community for more than 80 years.

“As well as creating job opportunities for experienced people in the community, we now hope to employ more locals who are looking to secure their first-ever job or to start a career in retail.”

Coles state general manager Mark O’Connor said each store created about 100 retail jobs.

They said the market-style stores would have the latest supermarket concepts and a wide range of fresh food and groceries.

Between September this year and November 2017, Coles will open nine supermarkets, at Byford, Riverton, Secret Harbour, Lakelands, Kwinana, Northam, Alkimos, Subiaco and Vasse, and extend its Mandurah Forum store.
