Survivor would do it differently in future

Shaun, who did not want his surname published, frantically smashed down his wooden pergola to reduce fire risk to his house, then jumped in his pool fully clothed and hid in the kitchen when the flames approached.

His wife, children and one of their dogs had already evacuated to Mt Helena. Shaun said he would not do it again.

‘It has been an experience and not one of the best,’ he said.

‘We are still waiting on the insurance to replace the perimeter fence, back pergolas, roof guttering and pool fencing; we don’t blame the insurance company but we just want to move forward,’ he said.

Shaun said he was relieved and thankful that his family were still alive and safe and that they were able to save their memories.
