SWAN Animal Haven is appealing for volunteers to keep the dog rescue centre open by sparing a couple of hours for a Perth-wide street collection.

The cost to run the facility increases year on year and the charity depends on the goodwill of its supporters.

Vice-president Sylvia Taunt said the street appeal was the first of two major fundraising events in the year, with work under way for the April fete.

“We need to raise the money just to run the place, pay food and vet bills and repairs to fences and other things that break down,” she said.

Among the helpers at the centre is 15-year-old Georgia Jeffreys, of Gooseberry Hill, who has a soft spot for Boots.

The street appeal will take place on Friday, March 17 and walkers are able to raise money locally and across the city.

Anyone free to shake a can should contact the rescue centre between 11am and 3pm on 9279 8485 or 9293 2047.
