Teen falls to death

Mitchell White (19) was riding on Railway Bridge last Sunday when police say he lost control of his bike, hit sleepers on the bridge and fell to the ground.

He died at the scene.

Police said Mr White, who leaves behind a young son, was wearing a helmet but no other protective clothing.

Rory Edye, manager of local hay export company Gilmac where Mr White worked casually for the past few months, described him ‘a nice young man’.

‘I was sad to hear that such a nice youngster had died and I want to talk to his parents to express my condolences,’ Mr Edye said.

‘I can understand the sense of loss everyone feels at this time.’

Shire of York President Matthew Reid echoed Mr Edye’s sentiments.

He said he was not aware of any other incidents on the bridge.

‘It’s a very sad and unfortunate event for the family and the whole community,’ Mr Reid said.

‘We are all shell-shocked at the moment.’

Mr White attended York District High School and was a much-loved member of the tight-knit York community.

Tributes and messages of condolence flowed on his Facebook page as friends and family learned of the accident.

‘Can’t even comprehend this. My heart breaks for you and the loss your family must endure. RIP gorgeous young man,’ Tatianna Dupre said.

‘I miss you Mitch. Not going to be the same without you,’ Emma Hazelden said.

Kyann Saunders described Mr White’s death as ‘heartbreaking’.

‘You were such a great guy Mitchell White,’ he said.

Justin Croucher said: ‘Thanks for the memories bud. Never a dull moment with you.’
