It is believed the driver then attacked the male victim’s 33-year-old female friend, however the male victim got up and struggled with the driver.

The driver continued to assault the man until the woman picked up the shovel and struck the driver with it, causing him to let go.

A passer-by stopped to help and the three of them held the driver down until police arrived.

Police arrested the driver and seized the vehicle, which displayed stolen plates.
The two tourists and the driver were taken to hospital.

A 36-year-old man from Sawyers Valley has been charged with Attempted Unlawfully to Kill and is due to appear in the Midland Magistrates Court today.

The investigation is ongoing.
