Vehicle trying to overtake road train in fatal crash

POLICE say a fatal crash near Southern Cross on Saturday night involved a vehicle trying to overtake a road train.

Major Crash investigators said the Toyota Hilux was travelling east on Great Eastern Highway about 9.15pm when it tried to pass the truck and collided head-on with a Holden Commodore sedan coming the other way.

The driver of the Holden, a 58-year-old man from Northam, was killed.

The 25-year-old man driving the Toyota and his 24-year-old male passenger received minor injuries and were taken to Royal Perth Hospital as a precaution.

Anyone with information about the crash 40km west of Southern Cross or who saw the Toyota Hilux or Holden Commodore being driven before it, is asked to call 1800 333 000.

• Police are also investigating a fatal crash on Saturday at 6.30am. A white Nissan Patrol ute was being driven south on South Coast Highway when about 5km south of Jerramungup, the vehicle left the road and struck trees.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a man in his 40s, died.
