West angry at Tafe cuts

Agricultural Region MLC Darren West said that it would be devastating to affected staff and students in Northam and the Wheatbelt, who already pay extra for their studies through the Tafe sector.

Mr West asked questions in Parliament on Tuesday and Training and Workforce Development Minister Liza Harvey confirmed that some 25 positions would be lost from the North Regional Tafe, 32 from Central Regional Tafe and 35 from South Regional Tafe.

Mr West said the job losses would have a devastating effect on the delivery of services to the students.

“This is yet another negative decision made by this Government in our training sector,” he said.

“Of equal concern is that Nationals WA members and ministers have allowed this to happen and have remained silent on this issue.”

Mr West said he was disappointed there was no consultation with the Tafe community ahead of the announcement.

“For many the first they heard about this decision was to read it in the paper,” he said.
