Your paper was this week named as a finalist in the Special Publications category of the Community Newspapers of Australia awards for its Bushfire Special Edition in the wake of the Parkerville and Stoneville fires in January.

The edition featured 12 pages of fire-related coverage, including stories about the local people who fought the blaze and those that lost their homes.

Gazette photographer Bruce Hunt has been named a finalist in the Best News Photo and Best Feature Photo categories of the awards. Editor Stephen Miles described the nominations as the culmination of a lot of hard work by the Midland-based editorial team of Julian Wright, Joel Kelly, Sophie Gabrielle and photographer Bruce Hunt, to bring local stories to local people each week.

‘We may be relatively small but we punch well above our weight,’ Miles said.

‘We have a great team of reporters and photographers who go above and beyond to keep readers up-to-date with what’s happening on their patch.’

Winners of the national awards will be named at a special, interstate ceremony in June.
