Basketball: Kalamunda Eastern Suns SBL women beam into finals contention following wins

Justin BianchiniHills Avon Valley Gazette

KALAMUNDA Eastern Suns centre Jennie Rintala is the Women’s SBL Player of the Week for round 8.

Kalamunda has jumped into the finals conversation following its three-game winning streak, largely on the back of standout performances from Rintala and teammate Alex Ciabattoni.

In round 8 the Eastern Suns took on the Joondalup Wolves and Cockburn Cougars, two genuine play-off teams.

Friday night at Joondalup, Rintala led with 28 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks on the Eastern Suns’ way to a 78-75 victory. Perhaps her best statistic was holding Wolves’ centre Ellyce Ironmonger to five rebounds for the game.

The next night the Eastern Suns claimed victory at home over the Cougars 87-62, with Rintala contributing 25 points, 9 rebounds and four assists in just 29 minutes. Rintala wasn’t able to be contained inside and went 12-13 from the free-throw line on the way to her game high.

The Eastern Suns now sit 6-4 and sixth on the WSBL ladder but face several higher-ranked sides in upcoming matches.

The road ahead won’t be easy, as they come against Flames (4th), Magic (3rd) and Redbacks (2nd).
