Football: Kalamunda Cougars reserves end season with finals loss

Brad WoodgateHills Avon Valley Gazette

KALAMUNDA Cougars’ D2 reserves travelled to Kingsway Reserve on Saturday to do battle with Whitfords in a preliminary final, but lost by nine points, 9.9 (63) to 8.6 (54).

Whitfords jumped out early kicking the first three goals.

But a goal from best-on-ground player Zac Batsioudis right before quarter-time settled the Cougars, and they started the second quarter well with Kevin Cox and Steven Cameron kicking majors, and Cameron Pryce playing well on his wing.

Whitfords again jumped away in the second half and whenever it looked like they were poised to break the game open, the Cougars responded with goals through Simon Bycroft, Courtney Graefling and another from Batsioudis.

Whitfords pushed out to a 20-point lead midway through the last quarter, but goals from Matt van Herk, who capped off a great season with a stellar finals series which saw him in the votes in all three finals, and Brendon Shanahan weren’t quite enough for the Cougars to get in front.

Van Herk’s effort capped off a great season with a stellar finals series which saw him in the votes in all three finals,

One big thank you to all wives, girlfriends, extended families and the community of Kalamunda for all your support this season.

The club looks forward to 2017.
