PERTH Glory’s quest for the A-League title next year starts with a pre-season tour of the Philippines on Monday.
The 10-day tour, at the invitation of the Philippines Football Federation, will involve three matches and football clinics for the 30-man Glory party.
Glory will take on Global FC, a UFL all-star team and the Philippines national team, known as the Azkals.
Coach Kenny Lowe said the tour was a perfect start to the team’s pre-season campaign.
“This is fantastic for all the lads, the coaches and football staff,” he said.
“It’s just the right tonic to get everyone united and focused.”
The Azkals are ranked in the top 120 and narrowly missed earning a berth in the AFC Asian Cup in Australia in January last year.
They defeated North Korea 3-2 in their World Cup Qualifying game in March.
“They’re not to be taken lightly by any means,” Lowe said.
“They’ve got players who compete in the Asian Club Championships and the national boys are all technically gifted. I’m expecting a pretty tough hit out.”
Among the fresh faces in the new look Glory line-up will be Rhys Williams, Brandon Wilson and goalkeepers Nic Feely and Jordan Thurtell.
“I’m pumped to be honest,” former Middlesbrough captain and Socceroo Williams said.
“It’s a great chance for everyone to get to know each other and find out what makes everyone tick, so I can’t wait for it.”
Glory plays Brisbane Roar on August 10 in the FFA Cup.
The team’s first A-League clash – and the start of its 20-year anniversary – is on October 8 against the Central Coast Mariners at Perth Oval.
