Swimming: LapLovers to stay cool and fit at Darlington

Lynn GriersonHills Avon Valley Gazette

LAPLOVERS is a new swimming initiative to encourage more people to stay cool and fit by training at Bilgoman Aquatic Centre in Darlington.

The personal challenge takes the heat out of competitions by allowing swimmers of different abilities to sign up without the pressure.

Devised by Shire of Mundaring, swimmers will record their distances and then compare them with known distances; for example, 5000 laps of Bilgoman is the equivalent of swimming from Fremantle to Busselton.

Diehard swimmers who clock up 760 laps of the pool could consider the challenge equal to swimming the English Channel.

The double lanes of the pool will be set aside for lap swimming, from 5.30am to 8.30am, Monday to Friday, with one lane staying open until 6.30pm and two lanes available 6.30pm to 8pm.

The best times for lap swimming on weekdays are before 9.30am, between noon and 1pm and after 6pm, with extended lap training time when swimming lessons are not using lanes.

Over the weekend and on public holidays, the opening times will vary from 7am to 8.30am, with two lanes reserved from 8.30am to 11am.
