A Blooming Affair for mental health

Tyler BrownJoondalup Times

WITH spring in full swing, a team of Joondalup Tafe students have chosen a floral theme for their upcoming charity fundraiser.

SAGEvents, which comprises of North Metropolitan Tafe event management students Meg Lewis, Jayne Levy, Mikayla Buck and Eliza Halls, will host A Blooming Affair on November 9 to raise funds and awareness for mental health charity Youth Focus.

Ms Lewis said they chose Youth Focus because each team member had “close ties with mental health issues”.

“It is extremely important to talk more about mental health and raise more awareness of the issue,” she said.

She said Ms Buck’s personal mental health issues while she was growing up were also a driver to support Youth Focus.

“Mikayla suffered from depression for about a year during high school due to being bullied by people she trusted as friends,” Ms Lewis said.

“Because of this, she now deals with anxiety in most aspects of her life, she struggles to open up to new people and therefore people think she is rude, but that is not the case.

“She was lucky enough to have a very supportive mother who helped her to get through these hard times. If she didn’t have her mother there for her, who knows where Mikayla would be today.

“But she knows not everyone has a mother or someone there to support them through these sorts of hardships, so what Youth Focus does to educate and raise awareness of mental health can be a wonderful help to someone who may be suffering alone.”

The fundraising cocktail evening from 5pm to 10pm will be held at The Pavilion Green at the Joondalup campus with guests encouraged to dress for the floral theme.

Tickets are $70 including canapés and a taco stand, drinks, live music, a caricature artist, raffles and an auction.
