Another step forward for park redevelopment

GROUND is about to be broken on one of the City of Joondalup’s most anticipated projects that will eventually include a fitness staircase likened to Jacob’s Ladder.

Stage one of the Whitfords Nodes health and wellbeing hub in Hillarys will include construction of a new playspace with shade sails, picnic shelters, barbecues, drink fountains, outdoor fitness equipment, power and water outlets, tree planting and an improved irrigation system.

To accommodate this work, sections of the park will be unavailable for use from Monday, August 12.

The main carpark, beach access via the coastal path and toilet block will remain open.

Joondalup chief executive Garry Hunt said because of the size of the project, the City’s contractor required unrestricted access to the park.

“While there will be some inconvenience to regular users of the park, we ask these people for their understanding and urge them to perhaps consider alternative venues during the first stage of construction works,” he said.

While the council awarded the tender for the stage one works to Total Eden at last month’s July meeting, for $929,350, the tender for stage two works has yet to be awarded.

The second stage will include construction of the exercise stairway with an elevation of 21m on the northern dune as well as a new lookout.

However, the City has applied for a clearing permit for 0.035ha of bushland to accommodate the stairway, which is open for public comment until August 10 through the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.

The project is being funded by the City and a $719,266 Lotterywest grant.
