A CARRAMAR teenager ventured into bake sales to raise funds for a sailing adventure.

Brent Studman (16) has been raising funds to go on a Leeuwin Youth Explorer Voyage next week by baking apple slice.

The Prendiville Catholic College student received a scholarship covering three-quarters of the cost, and needed to raise another $700 to go on the seven-day voyage, which starts on October 7.

“My plan was to bake slabs of apple slice and sell them at $3 a piece or $30 for a slab of 12,” he said.

“The ingredients cost is $9 to make one apple pie slab, so my profit is $21 per slab I make.”

Working with the team at Leeuwin Ocean Adventure, Brent developed a fundraising plan of attack and sold about 500 pieces of apple slice, raising about $1000.

“I’ve taken 60 orders from 60 different people,” he said.

“I’ve actually exceeded my fundraising goal already and am putting any extra funds towards my next voyage.

“Having this opportunity to sail on the Leeuwin and complete my workplace learning through the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation, I feel that I’m finally on the right path to working towards what I really want to do.

“I’m very excited to take part on the Leeuwin voyage and learn so much about the maritime industry as I see myself working in this field in the future.”

His mother said Brent would gain a WACE credit once he completed the voyage then be able to be a volunteer with the Leeuwin foundation and gain experience in the marine industry.
