UPDATE, 5.10pm: Police are still at the scene and are investigating if the chemicals found are connected to illicit drug manufacturing.

The substance was deemed not to be explosive.

Entry to Lesueur Rise is still restricted.

THE police bomb squad is at a Sorrento street to check the safety of chemicals found abandoned near an electrical transformer in Perth’s north.

Officers have cordoned off Lesueur Rise and said no one is to enter the street, including residents.

Police were called to the scene about 10.20am.

Spokeswoman Susan Usher said the power to some homes had been cut has a precaution.

“The bomb technician is there just to ascertain if the chemicals are explosive or if they could be dangerous to breathe in,” she said.

She said there was no official word from police on whether the chemicals were found in a backpack, as reported by some media outlets.
