City of Joondalup charity clothing drop off day and e-waste collections coming

Tyler BrownJoondalup Times

CLEAN out your wardrobe ahead of the City of Joondalup’s first charity clothing drop off day of the year.

People can donate unwanted clothes, textiles, towels and bed linen between 9am and 2pm on February 24 at the City’s administration building on Boas Avenue in Joondalup or at the back of the Craigie Leisure Centre.

Items will be distributed to Anglicare WA, Vinnies WA and the Salvos Stores to be reused or recycled into new products, with proceeds from sales going to community-based services and programs that help people in need.

These drop off events were introduced in 2015 and since then, more than 30 tonnes of clothing and textiles have been collected.

The City is also hosting a free two-day electronic waste collection this weekend.

E-waste collections ensure valuable resources such as tin, nickel, aluminium, copper, lead and mercury are recovered and re-used to keep old technology out of landfill and stop potentially hazardous materials from leaking into the environment.

Items include computers, monitors and equipment, notebooks, printers and cartridges, fax machines, scanners, televisions, video and DVD players, projectors, network equipment, cables, floppy discs, electronic games, stereos, cameras and MP3 players.

Items not accepted include microwaves, whitegoods, small appliances, vacuum cleaners, power tools and non-computer batteries.

People can drop their e-waste off at the back of Craigie Leisure Centre between 9am and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday and staff will be available to lift bulky materials.
