INTERNATIONALLY renowned artist and researcher Helen Pynor is coming to Joondalup as an artist-in-residence.
Dr Pynor will be a guest of the City of Joondalup from October 13 to November 30, when she will develop a concept for a commissioned artwork for the City.
The Sydney-based artist’s work is characterised by an engagement with living biological entities (organs, cells), through which she explores the nature of human and non-human bodies.

Joondalup Mayor Albert Jacob said Dr Pynor was the second to take part in the City’s artist-in-residence program, following New York’s Brandon Ballenge in 2015.
Mr Jacob said it was an effective way to contract an artist to create an original artwork and engage the community in discussions while offering artists the opportunity to access new audiences.
“A successful residency should be of mutual benefit to both artist and host and Dr Pynor’s visit gives the City an opportunity to view the local area through the fresh eyes of a visitor and her creative response to her time in our City,” he said.

Dr Pynor will also be part of a panel discussion about regeneration at ECU Joondalup on Thursday, October 25.
The free event is being presented by the City and UWA’s SymbioticA – an artistic laboratory dedicated to the research, learning and critique of life sciences – exploring issues of physical ability, access and inclusion, injury and rehabilitation and biomedical innovations.
