A DEMOUNTABLE classroom at Currambine Primary School containing asbestos is being removed.

The work follows a campaign by the school board, concerned community members and Burns Beach MLA Mark Folkard and makes good on a State Election commitment.

Removal started last week during the school holidays and is expected to be completed for the second week of term 3.

Mr Folkard commended the school board for raising awareness of the asbestos.

“It shows the good that can be achieved when concerned community members band together,” he said.

“There is no excuse in this day and age for inaction on asbestos.

“We cannot have children going each day into a classroom that could pose a grave risk to their health.

“This is why we made it our top priority to remove the contaminated demountable.”
