PEOPLE attending ECU’s Music Under the Stars event in Joondalup this month will be asked to support a scholarship fund.

For the first time, the university will have tap-and-go facilities for the audience to make donations to the Inspiring Minds Equity Scholarship fund at the alumni event on November 23.

The scholarships support students facing disadvantage or struggling financially, including paramedical science student Amy Sheridan who was elated to receive a $3000 scholarship and used it to pay off her higher education loan and to repay her mother.

“Being a mature age student and already having a daughter, I often feel as though time is against me,” she said.

“My growing student debt is a large stress that lives in the back of my mind and a hindrance to my goals.

“Reducing my student debt is so important to myself and my future in raising my daughter.

“My goals are to immediately start full-time work following the completion of my bachelor degree, be able to purchase a safer, more reliable vehicle to transport my daughter in and eventually to buy a house for us to live in.

“To be able to achieve these goals, I need to keep my debt minimal.

“Every cent of this scholarship has been utilised for relieving my study debt and helping me to continue forward with my education.”

ECU vice-president of development and alumni relations Sonia Mackay-Coghill said the impact of the scholarship was “immeasurable” for students’ academic and life success.

“A scholarship extends far greater than just monetary support; it gives recipients the encouragement to achieve their dreams,” she said.

“A scholarship for a graduate research student will ease the financial burden of every day costs including rent, accommodation, textbooks and commuting.

“It sounds so simple but can make a world of difference.”
