CONSTRUCTION of the multi-storey carpark at Edgewater train station has been given the green light after its development application was conditionally approved on Thursday.

The carpark, promised during the 2013 State Election campaign, proposes a ground level and two upper levels providing 1047 parking bays, which will take the total number of bays across the site to 1370.

The Public Transport Authority is also investigating options for space for three electric cars.

Because of existing overhead powerlines, car parking will remain at-grade at the northern part of the site. Upper levels will be accessed via a ramp on the southern side of the carpark from George Grey Place.

As part of the development, the application proposed an additional left turn pocket and right turn lane from George Grey Place on to Joondalup Drive.

A condition also stated the applicant must ensure arrangements are made for upgrades to the junction at Joondalup Drive and Ocean Reef Road before the carpark opens.

The State Government has already set aside $1.5 million for this upgrade, with the City of Joondalup contributing $165,000.
